I don't see much backlash to Brand's "Don't vote" suggestion from those who, ostensibly, rely on such votes to maintain/secure their seat on the gravy train, so I guess they also don't see any actual point in people voting for them.

Never said i dont like him. in fact, we used to be very close friends and i admire and have pride in what he has achieved but when i read his ramblings, it makes me roll my eyes as he does like a crusade.
maybe if i took the time to read it beneath all of the dickens like chatter, i may agree but im not sure the messiah or revolutionary leader we all seem to wish for comes in the shape or form of russells frazzled mind

You can mock him and his position all you like, it doesn't alter the reality.
A lot of what he says is spot on and just because people dont like him as a person they let it cloud their judgement on what he is saying.
Most of the negative stuff on here regarding what he says and stands for is bullshit.
He is offering no solutions and he doesnt pretend to but he is pointing out the flaws in the system as it stands.

To be fair, the stuff Brand says would definitely have appealed to me when I was a sixth former.

Gavros 10:31 Sat Oct 18 Re: Russel Brand: revolution
Teaching kids not to vote? In a world where corporations control every single aspect of our lives I think the 'kids' see the futility of voting. Our votes over the last 50 years alone should have taught you that they mean nothing. Global corporations get what they want and we are kept quiet and confused with our 'vote'!
It goes deeper though. The question is who owns and control these global behemoths? Find these hidden people and we find our true rulers.

It sounds as if you think that's a bad thing?

Well if he done it for that reason , he has really put in the ground work. Over an hour podcast each week for the last 6 months is a lot of time to invest just to sell a book, which would sell any way.
If you cant see the merit in what the man says, fair play to you. But in reality I bet you nay sayers havent given his videos 10 minutes before writing them off....

Joke, when you refer to UKIP you must mean Farage and that man is absolutely part of the establishment. His shtick about being different is a con of huge proportions.

gavros, I agree with the points you make. the system is clearly shit but the other alternative would probably be far worse. at least it's not a clear dictatorship yet

I think Brand is pretty close on hos assessment of modern politics and the dangerous cosy relationship between government, business and media but don't really see that he is offering any realistic route to change. On the other hand I don't get the sense that he is claiming Orwell would be a supporter but is rather drawing on his insights into how current day society has been shaped.
We are all well indoctrinated with all the our way is the best way, mother of parliaments, spreading democracy tosh that come to accept it is as fact and rarely question it. The general alienation with our leaders and lawmakers leads us to either ignore or just go along with it on the basis that you can't do anything significant or constructive about it anyway. The system is designed to preserve the status quo.
I am drawn to an Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) quote pertinent to the subject where he is talking about anarchy: "I believe that all other political states are in fact variations or outgrowths of a basic state of anarchy; after all, when you mention the idea of anarchy to most people they will tell you what a bad idea it is because the biggest gang would just take over. Which is pretty much how I see contemporary society. We live in a badly developed anarchist situation in which the biggest gang has taken over and have declared that it is not an anarchist situation – that it is a capitalist or a communist situation. But I tend to think that anarchy is the most natural form of politics for a human being to actually practice."
